Asish Chand, the new captain of the FSC Ba Golf Club, views golf not just as a game, but as a passion and a personal calling. Since becoming a member of the club in 2011, he has actively worked to cultivate a vibrant community around the sport, and now, in his new role, he is focused on enhancing the club’s reputation and expanding participation in golf throughout Ba.
Chand, who is also a high school teacher, has a longstanding affinity for golf. His commitment led him to accept the captaincy in 2024, with the hope of ensuring that the club thrives as a welcoming space for players from both Fiji and abroad. “I want to ensure the club continues to thrive and remains a place where people can enjoy and socialize,” he noted.
His responsibilities extend beyond organizing well-known events such as the prestigious Ba Open. Chand is dedicated to maintaining the club’s reputation for friendly service and integrity, often planning activities with input from his committee and former captain Rohit Chandra. He takes pride in the club’s well-maintained course and smooth operations.
Chand recognizes the crucial role of media in promoting the club and elevating the sport’s profile. He emphasized that events like the Ba Open not only attract participants but also provide valuable exposure for sponsors, further fueling the growth of golf in the region. Together with Chandra, he leads junior clinics to inspire young talent, aiming to make golf more accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
Despite the challenges of running the club, such as weather and equipment maintenance, Chand’s leadership shines through, particularly with the upcoming RCM Ba Open 2024 expected to be a highlight. Notably, he is an accomplished golfer himself, representing Fiji in international competitions and bringing home accolades, including a bronze medal from the Pacific Games.
Looking to the future, Chand hopes for continuous growth for the FSC Ba Golf Club, emphasizing the importance of perseverance and integrity in the sport. His optimistic vision includes cultivating a strong golf culture that inspires and connects individuals within Ba and beyond.
His encouraging words for budding golfers reflect his passion: “Keep practicing, play with respect and integrity, and enjoy the game of golf.” Under his guidance, the FSC Ba Golf Club aims to sustain its legacy while fostering a bright future in the sport.
Through his leadership, Chand signifies a powerful example of how dedication and community spirit can nurture a thriving sports environment.
