Charting New Waters: The Call for Future Maritime Careers

Public Works, Transport and Meteorological Services Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau has encouraged students to pursue careers in the maritime sector. Speaking at the World Maritime Day celebrations in Suva, he highlighted the growing need for skilled workers in this industry.

Ro Filipe noted that many qualified professionals are leaving Fiji for opportunities abroad, creating a gap that could be filled by students opting for maritime careers. He remarked, “One of the significant challenges Fiji faces is the emigration of our technically skilled individuals.”

He expressed gratitude to students for considering the maritime industry, stating, “We need more professionals in this field.” He acknowledged that shipping operators are experiencing difficulties in hiring qualified crews, underscoring the importance of addressing this issue.

The minister also emphasized that the annual celebration aims to recognize the vital contributions of the maritime sector, stressing the importance of safety, innovation, and sustainable practices. This year’s theme, “Navigating the future: Safety First,” highlights the importance of maritime safety as a pathway to a safer and more sustainable future.
