Public Works, Transport and Meteorological Services Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau has urged students to explore career opportunities in the maritime industry. Speaking at the World Maritime Day celebrations held at Albert Park in Suva, he highlighted the increasing demand for skilled workers in the maritime sector.
Ro Filipe noted that many skilled professionals are leaving the country for opportunities abroad, creating a gap that students can help fill by choosing maritime careers. “As we know, one of the significant challenges Fiji faces is the emigration of our technically skilled individuals,” he remarked.
He expressed gratitude to students for considering the maritime industry and emphasized the urgent need for more qualified personnel. “I am aware that some shipping operators are struggling to find qualified crew, which is very important for the industry,” he added.
The Minister also emphasized that the annual celebration is an opportunity to recognize the essential role of the maritime sector, with a focus on safety, innovation, and sustainable practices. This year’s theme, “Navigating the Future: Safety First,” underscores the critical importance of maritime safety in fostering a safer and more sustainable maritime environment.
