In the past 72 hours, a total of 934 traffic infringements have been recorded, with minor offenses dominating the list, largely attributed to the Christmas shopping rush. Assistant Commissioner for Police Operations (ACPO) Livai Driu reported that a significant number of drivers were found violating basic road regulations.

Out of the total infringements, 440 individuals were cited for minor offenses, while 311 were ticketed for speeding, a concerning trend according to ACP Driu who emphasized that speeding remains the primary cause of accidents. He urged drivers to adhere to speed limits to ensure road safety.

Other offenses included 58 drivers charged with careless driving, and each of the offenses of failing to produce a driving license and not wearing a seat belt had 51 violations recorded. Additionally, 10 drivers were penalized for carrying too many passengers, 8 for using mobile phones while driving, and 5 for operating vehicles with expired licenses.

To combat these issues, ACP Driu highlighted ongoing efforts to raise traffic safety awareness and emphasized the importance of proper documentation while driving. Notably, 23 drivers were apprehended for operating vehicles under the influence of alcohol.

As the holiday season approaches and road traffic is expected to increase, the ACP assured that traffic officers will maintain vigilance on the roads. He advised travelers to plan their trips wisely, take adequate rest, and limit alcohol consumption if they plan to drive.

He reassured the public that checkpoints would continue to be in place, noting that they are established for the safety and security of everyone on the road.

The focus on road safety during this busy time is a positive step towards reducing traffic-related incidents, and ongoing campaigns to promote responsible driving can contribute significantly to ensuring a safer environment for all motorists and pedestrians.
