The Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) is set to undergo a leadership change as current CEO Dr. Amit Chanan has announced his decision not to renew his contract, which expires in March 2025. Dr. Chanan has conveyed to the WAF Board his intention to seek new opportunities after his three-year tenure.
Chairman of the WAF, Ratu Savenaca Seniloli, acknowledged Dr. Chanan’s significant contributions during his leadership. Under his direction, WAF successfully completed the Viria Water Treatment Plant project, recognized as one of the largest water infrastructure undertakings in the South Pacific. Additionally, Dr. Chanan has been pivotal in developing the Water Sector 2050 Strategy, an ambitious $8.5 billion investment plan aimed at ensuring sustainable and resilient water and sanitation services for all Fijians over the next 30 years.
Chairman Seniloli expressed respect for Dr. Chanan’s decision, noting that leadership changes often create opportunities for fresh perspectives and innovation. This transition is seen not only as a change within the organization but also as a crucial moment for the WAF to continue evolving and addressing Fiji’s water and sanitation challenges.
As the WAF looks forward, the groundwork laid by Dr. Chanan, combined with the strategic vision of the Water Sector 2050 Strategy, positions the authority for ongoing development. This shift heralds a hopeful future for the water services in Fiji, which are critical to the well-being of its communities. The change in leadership signifies a new chapter that can pave the way for innovative approaches to enhance water services throughout the nation, ensuring the needs of the population are met for generations to come.
