Litia Matia, a Learning Development Specialist with the Housing Authority of Fiji, has been honored with the ‘Advocates Influencing Mindsets & Mentoring Agents Award’ for her remarkable dedication to recycling efforts. The award was presented by Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica during the Global Recycling Day celebrations at Churchill Park in Lautoka.
Matia has been a key advocate for recycling, significantly supported by the Pacific Recycling Foundation’s ‘I Recycle’ program, which collaborates with USAID’s Clean Cities, Blue Ocean initiative. She has undergone extensive training provided by the Foundation and extended her advocacy to women in five coastal villages within the tikina of Nakorotubu, Province of Ra. These women are now actively engaged in collecting, cleaning, sorting, and storing recyclables, making a substantial contribution to sustainable waste management in their communities.
Amitesh Deo, the founder of the Pacific Recycling Foundation, lauded Matia’s impactful work, highlighting her as an example of how individual advocacy can lead to significant change. He noted, “Her passion and dedication have transformed recycling practices within the Housing Authority of Fiji and empowered women in remote villages to take ownership of sustainable waste management.”
The AMMA Award, which Matia received, recognizes individuals who excel in promoting recycling and instilling positive behavior change in sustainable practices. The Pacific Recycling Foundation continues to champion local advocates like Matia, emphasizing their crucial role in driving community engagement for recycling efforts.
Matia’s recognition exemplifies a positive trend towards empowering individuals to lead grassroots movements that promote environmental sustainability. Such initiatives inspire a culture of recycling and eco-conscious behavior, underscoring our collective responsibility to tackle waste management challenges and work towards a cleaner, greener future for Fiji.
