Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has recognized the difficulties currently facing the nation, stating, “As natives, we are going through a period of challenges and change.”
During the annual meeting for the province of Tailevu yesterday, Rabuka expressed appreciation for the support the province has extended to the Coalition Government. The two-day meeting is taking place at Vuci, Tokatoka in Tailevu.
Rabuka emphasized significant developments in Tailevu, such as the enhancements in wharf facilities at Waidalice and Wainawi, along with the upgraded water supply systems in Namau and Viria, which are set to benefit various areas in the province soon.
He also outlined ambitious plans for Tailevu, focusing on sectors such as agriculture, fisheries, healthcare, youth development, and poverty alleviation, in addition to tackling illegal drug cultivation.
The Prime Minister noted the importance of traditional roles in community leadership and their influence in both religious and governmental frameworks. He mentioned that approximately 483 traditional titles, which account for 55 percent, have been filled, while 396 positions, or 45 percent, remain unoccupied in Tailevu. Rabuka stressed that it is crucial for the Council to address these vacant positions.
In discussing societal challenges, he covered topics such as climate change, cyclone preparedness, cultural preservation, and the increasing rates of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), HIV, along with violence against women and children.
Rabuka concluded by underscoring the necessity for cooperative planning at local, district, and provincial levels to ensure that Tailevu continues to progress and develop.
