Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka celebrated a significant milestone today as part of the land known as NG 187 was officially returned to the original landowning units of Vitogo Village. This momentous reversion followed a long and determined journey, showcasing the power of perseverance and belief.

During the land reversion ceremony, Prime Minister Rabuka reflected on the extensive efforts that led to this outcome. He expressed satisfaction at reaching the end of a lengthy process, stating, “However, here we are, at the end of the journey, still standing and still believing that with perseverance nothing is impossible.”

Rabuka highlighted a Cabinet decision from 1999 that approved the reversion of NG 187 to its original owners, emphasizing the importance of this occasion as he saw many descendants of the landowning units gathered in support. He also honored those who played key roles in the long journey toward this achievement, suggesting that their efforts laid the foundation for today’s success.

The Cabinet decision in 1999 acknowledged that the land was no longer required for its original public purpose while ensuring other areas remained in use. The Prime Minister confirmed that landowners received compensation for the 25-acre extension of the Tavakubu Cemetery, demonstrating a commitment to justice and recognition of historical grievances.

Furthermore, he indicated that the administration of leased lands, previously managed by the Fiji Sugar Corporation and the Fiji Pine Commission, will now transition to the iTaukei Land Trust Board. With the approval of the survey plan and Cabinet’s legal notice, the reversion of the land has been officially recognized, marking the end of a 25-year quest since the Cabinet’s original approval in 1999 and 102 years since the land was acquired from its original owners by the colonial government.

This ceremony symbolizes not just the return of land, but also a significant step towards rectifying historical injustices, fostering unity within the community, and recognizing the heritage and rights of the indigenous population. It stands as a hopeful reminder of what can be accomplished through determination and collective effort.
