Residents of Naqiliso in Davuilevu are calling for immediate action as a project by the Fiji Corrections Service has obstructed the main drainage outlets, leading to significant flooding issues in the area. Many homes and roads are now partially submerged in wastewater, causing distress among the community.
Narayan Chand, a long-time resident of over 25 years, reported that the flooding has persisted for more than three days, creating an unbearable situation due to unpleasant odors and leaving local workers stranded. He indicated that two key drainage outlets were inadvertently buried and blocked when contractors began their work on the Fiji Corrections Service project last Thursday.
Chand expressed frustration, stating, “We understand people are saying Naqiliso is an informal settlement. We are not asking for much; we just need the waste drainage issue addressed.”
Sanjay Narayan, a minibus driver and the sole provider for his family, shared that the flooding has halted his ability to work since the project started.
In response, the Fiji Corrections Service clarified that the project aims to expand the cemetery site over the next seven years. They have also committed to reaching out to the contractors involved to resolve the drainage issues affecting the community.
This situation emphasizes the need for urgent remedial measures to ensure the safety and well-being of Naqiliso residents as they navigate these challenging circumstances. With prompt action, there is hope for a resolution that could alleviate the ongoing distress within the community.
