Celebrating Unity: Prophet Muhammad’s Message for All Fijians

Professor Biman Prasad, Fiji’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, emphasized the teachings of Prophet Muhammad, describing him as a messenger of God who advocated for peace, inclusivity, tolerance, and ethical behavior. As the Muslim community in Fiji celebrates the birthday of the Prophet, Prof Prasad urged reflection on these principles as foundational for social, economic, and political progress.

He acknowledged the vital contributions of various religious groups to the nation, particularly highlighting the Muslim community’s role in fostering education and community spirit. “Our Muslim community has been and will continue to be a crucial participant in achieving these important goals,” he stated.

Prof Prasad asserted that nurturing these values is essential for building lasting peace, harmony, and tolerance while ensuring inclusivity, equality, dignity, and justice. He also recalled a significant historical moment in 1974 when the then National Federation Party, led by Hon Siddiq Moidin Koya, worked with Prime Minister Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara to establish public holidays for the celebrations of Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday and Diwali, recognizing the Indo-Fijian community’s contributions.

“This exemplified bipartisanship in the national interest,” he remarked. He concluded by extending warm wishes to the Muslim community for a blessed celebration in Fiji’s diverse, multi-cultural society.
