Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, emphasized the teachings of Prophet Muhammad, who preached peace, inclusivity, tolerance, and ethical conduct. He urged reflection on these principles during the celebrations marking the Birthday of the founder of Islam.
In his message to Fiji’s Muslim community, Prof Prasad highlighted that the principles of social, ethical, moral, and religious conduct are fundamental for social, economic, and political development. He recognized the valuable contributions made by all religious groups to Fiji, particularly in education and community life.
Pointing out the significance of the Muslim community as a vital stakeholder in national progress, Prof Prasad stated that this cooperation is essential for achieving lasting peace, harmony, and tolerance. He underlined the importance of inclusivity, equality, dignity, and justice in these efforts.
Recalling a significant historical moment, he noted that in 1974, the National Federation Party, led by Hon Siddiq Moidin Koya, successfully negotiated with then Prime Minister Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara to declare Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday and Diwali as public holidays. This decision was made to honor the Indo-Fijian community and represented a bipartisanship effort for the national interest.
In conclusion, Prof Prasad wished the Muslim community a blessed celebration of their Prophet’s Birthday, reaffirming the commitment to Fiji’s multicultural, multi-ethnic, and multi-religious identity.
