Celebrating Unity: Honoring Prophet Muhammad’s Legacy in Fiji

Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Professor Biman Prasad, emphasized the importance of reflecting on the teachings of Prophet Muhammad, who advocated for peace, inclusivity, tolerance, and ethical behavior. As Fiji’s Muslim community commemorates the Birthday of the founder of Islam, Prof Prasad extended his wishes for a blessed celebration.

He highlighted that the principles of social, ethical, moral, and religious conduct form the foundation of a nation’s social, economic, and political progress. “As national leaders, we must recognize the significant contributions of all religious groups in Fiji, particularly in education and community life,” he stated.

Prof Prasad affirmed that the Muslim community has historically played a vital role in the nation’s development and will continue to be key stakeholders in achieving these goals. He stressed that this commitment is essential for fostering lasting peace, harmony, and tolerance, as well as promoting inclusivity, equality, dignity, and justice.

He recalled the events of 1974 when the National Federation Party, under Opposition Leader Hon Siddiq Moidin Koya, negotiated with then-Prime Minister Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara to designate Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday and Diwali as public holidays in recognition of the Indo-Fijian community. This act exemplified bipartisanship in the interest of the nation.

In closing, Prof Prasad wished the Muslim community a meaningful celebration of their Prophet’s Birthday in Fiji’s multicultural and diverse society.
