Celebrating Unity: Fiji’s Tribute to Prophet Muhammad’s Legacy

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, emphasized the teachings of Prophet Muhammad, highlighting his messages of peace, inclusivity, tolerance, and ethical conduct. As Fiji’s Muslim community celebrates the birthday of the founder of Islam, Prof. Prasad encouraged reflection on these principles.

He noted that the foundations of social, ethical, moral, and religious conduct are essential for the development of society, economy, and politics. “As national leaders, we must recognize the significant contributions made by all religious groups to our nation, particularly in education and community life,” he stated.

Prof. Prasad highlighted the enduring role of the Muslim community as vital stakeholders in Fiji’s progress towards peace, harmony, and tolerance, stressing the importance of inclusivity, equality, dignity, and justice for all.

He recalled the historic 1974 negotiations between the National Federation Party, led by the then Opposition Leader Hon. Siddiq Moidin Koya, and Prime Minister Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, which resulted in the designation of Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday and Diwali as public holidays in recognition of the Indo-Fijian community’s contributions.

“This was a demonstration of bipartisanship in the national interest,” he remarked.

Finally, he extended warm wishes for a blessed celebration of the Prophet’s Birthday to the Muslim community in Fiji’s diverse, multi-cultural society.
