Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Professor Biman Prasad, emphasized the teachings of Prophet Muhammad, describing him as a messenger of God who promoted peace, inclusivity, tolerance, and ethical behavior. In light of the celebrations marking the Prophet’s Birthday, he extended warm wishes to Fiji’s Muslim community.
Professor Prasad highlighted that the values of social, ethical, moral, and religious conduct form the foundation for advancement in social, economic, and political realms. He acknowledged the essential contributions of all religious groups in Fiji, particularly in education and community life.
“The Muslim community has been, is, and will continue to be a vital participant in achieving our collective goals,” he stated. He noted that these values are critical for fostering lasting peace, harmony, tolerance, as well as promoting inclusivity, equality, dignity, and justice.
Reflecting on historical events, he mentioned that in 1974, the National Federation Party and then Opposition Leader Siddiq Moidin Koya negotiated with Prime Minister Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara to declare both Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday and Diwali as public holidays, recognizing the significance for the Indo-Fijian community. This gesture represented bipartisan efforts in the interest of national unity.
Professor Prasad concluded by reiterating his good wishes for a blessed celebration of the Prophet’s Birthday within Fiji’s multicultural and multi-religious society.
