Over the weekend, Suva celebrated two significant days in Chinese culture, marked by ceremonies led by Fiji’s President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, alongside China’s Ambassador to Fiji, Zhou Jian, government ministers, and members of the Chinese community. The event, organized by the Fiji Chinese Association, honored China’s National Day and the Mid-Autumn Festival with a grand feast and cultural performances.
President Katonivere highlighted the importance of the Mid-Autumn Festival, often referred to as the Moon Festival, emphasizing its cultural significance to the Chinese community. He noted that this celebration, occurring on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month, is traditionally a time for family reunions as the moon is at its brightest. Families gather to enjoy moon cakes as part of the festivities.
Jenny Seeto, President of the Chinese Association of Fiji, spoke about the significance of China’s National Day, which is celebrated on October 1. She explained that it has become a tradition to celebrate both occasions together due to their proximity in timing. Seeto expressed pride in Fiji’s strong relationship with China, mentioning the successful recent visit of Fiji’s Prime Minister to China.
Furthermore, Seeto reflected on China’s remarkable transformation over the years, noting the significant developments she has witnessed since her visit to China nearly 40 years ago, including changes in her parents’ village. Both Ratu Wiliame and Seeto recognized the contributions of the Chinese community to Fiji’s development and the strengthening of bilateral relations between Fiji and China.
