Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Strategic Planning, National Development and Statistics, Professor Biman Prasad, emphasized the teachings of Prophet Muhammad, highlighting his messages of peace, inclusivity, tolerance, and ethical conduct. He made these remarks while extending warm wishes to Fiji’s Muslim community as they celebrate the birthday of the founder of Islam.
Professor Prasad underscored the importance of social, ethical, moral, and religious principles as fundamental to the nation’s social, economic, and political progress. He acknowledged the significant contributions made by various religious groups, particularly the Muslim community, in enhancing education and community life in Fiji.
He stated, “As national leaders, we must recognize the crucial role every religious group plays in our country’s development.” He noted that fostering lasting peace, harmony, and tolerance is essential for promoting inclusivity, equality, dignity, and justice.
In a historical reference, Professor Prasad mentioned that in 1974, the then National Federation Party and Opposition Leader Hon Siddiq Moidin Koya engaged with then Prime Minister Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara to establish public holidays for both Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday and Diwali, marking a significant acknowledgment of the Indo-Fijian community’s contributions.
He concluded by extending heartfelt wishes to the Muslim community for a blessed celebration of their Prophet’s Birthday, emphasizing the importance of unity in Fiji’s diverse society.
