More than 270 individuals gathered at Ratu Sukuna Park in Suva to celebrate the International Women’s Day concert, marking a significant occasion organized by the Fiji Women’s Rights Movement (FWRM). Under the theme “If Women Stop, the World Stops,” this event has been held annually since 2020 and is dedicated to raising awareness about the essential yet often unrecognized unpaid care work performed by women.
FWRM’s Communications Officer, Serelisoni Moceica, emphasized the concert’s role as a vital platform to address gender inequalities, reflecting the historical spirit of protest associated with International Women’s Day, which dates back to 1910. Moceica noted that the event allows representatives from various women’s organizations to voice their daily struggles and advocate for change.
“The concert is not just an event; it’s a space for amplifying the issues women encounter and calling for action,” she stated. The participation this year saw 271 registered attendees, surpassing initial expectations, with many more joining on the day of the event despite the closure of prior registrations.
The evening included performances led by renowned singer Laisa Vulakoro, who also provided opportunities for emerging female artists, highlighting the inclusive spirit of the concert.
This year’s turnout signifies a growing community commitment to advocating for women’s rights and gender equality. The involvement of diverse organizations showcases the solidarity and collective effort required to address ongoing gender disparities. As similar events in Fiji have demonstrated, such gatherings serve as powerful reminders of the need for continuous advocacy and support for women’s issues.
The concert celebrates not only the achievements of women but also reinforces the commitment to fostering an equitable society for future generations. It embodies hope and encourages the idea that through unity and awareness, positive change can be achieved, paving the way for a world where women’s contributions are recognized and valued.
