Celebrating Unity: A Message of Peace from Fiji’s Finance Minister

Fiji’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, emphasized the importance of the teachings of Prophet Muhammad as a message of peace, inclusivity, tolerance, and ethical behavior. In his address to the Muslim community, he extended wishes for a blessed celebration of the Prophet’s Birthday, highlighting that the principles of social, ethical, moral, and religious conduct are fundamental for the country’s social, economic, and political progress.

Prof Prasad acknowledged the valuable contributions of all religious groups in Fiji, particularly in education, spiritual, and community life. He asserted the vital role of the Muslim community as a key stakeholder in achieving national goals of progress and unity.

He stressed that such contributions serve as the foundation for lasting peace, harmony, and tolerance, which are essential for ensuring inclusivity, equality, dignity, and justice. Reflecting on historical efforts, he noted that in 1974, the then National Federation Party and Opposition Leader, Hon Siddiq Moidin Koya, successfully negotiated with Prime Minister Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara to establish both Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday and Diwali as public holidays, recognizing the Indo-Fijian community.

Prof Prasad called this initiative a demonstration of bipartisanship in the national interest and once again wished the Muslim community a joyous celebration of their Prophet’s Birthday in Fiji’s diverse and multicultural society.
