Celebrating Unity: A Call for Reflection on Prophet Muhammad’s Teachings in Fiji

Fiji’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, emphasized the importance of the teachings of Prophet Muhammad, who advocated for peace, inclusivity, tolerance, and ethical behavior. He expressed his best wishes to the Muslim community in Fiji as they celebrate the birthday of the founder of Islam.

Prof Prasad highlighted that principles of social, ethical, moral, and religious conduct are fundamental to the progress of society, economy, and politics. He acknowledged the valuable contributions of various religious groups, including the Muslim community, to education and the spiritual and community life of the nation.

He stated that the Muslim community has always played a crucial role in advancing important national objectives, which fosters lasting peace, harmony, and tolerance. This inclusivity is essential for equality, dignity, and justice within the country.

Additionally, Prof Prasad recalled a significant moment in 1974 when bipartisan negotiations led to the designation of Prophet Muhammad’s birthday and Diwali as public holidays, recognizing the contributions of the Indo-Fijian community.
