British American Tobacco Fiji celebrated its annual Star Farmer Awards on March 21 at its Leaf Division facility in Votualevu, Nadi, coinciding with the company’s 70th anniversary. The event recognized the contributions of 88 farmers to the tobacco supply chain and highlighted their commitment to excellence in leaf growing.
General manager Sam Dormor addressed the gathering, praising the farmers who achieved remarkable production and performance levels. He noted that this was the fourth year of the Star Farmer Awards, which acknowledge those who excel in the company’s Growing Excellence program. Dormor congratulated the 88 recipients, who competed across three categories: gold, silver, and bronze.
This celebration aligns with the ongoing efforts to strengthen agriculture’s role in Fiji’s economy, particularly in the tobacco industry. In previous reports, the importance of agricultural resilience amidst challenging weather conditions was emphasized, including a reported 14 percent rise in crop yields this past year. The resilient spirit of the farmers, likened to “warriors,” is crucial for ensuring local food security and reinforcing the tobacco supply chain.
The awards event not only honored individual achievements but also reinforced BAT Fiji’s commitment to empowering farmers and enhancing agricultural productivity. The recognition given to these farmers cultivates a hopeful future for the agricultural sector, ultimately contributing to a stronger community and economic foundation in Fiji.
Furthermore, as BAT Fiji continues to evolve, integrating sustainable practices such as their recent partnership with Vision Energy Solutions for a $1.2 million solar project, the expectation is set high on innovative advancements that support agricultural and environmental sustainability going forward.
