Family, friends, and colleagues assembled at the Vatuwaqa Crematorium in Suva to pay tribute to Robert Pratt, former executive secretary of the Fiji Media Council, who recently passed away. Known affectionately as Bob Pratt, he was a cornerstone of the media landscape in Fiji, helping to co-found the Fiji Media Council Ltd in 1996, where he served as executive secretary until the council’s operations were suspended in 2010.

Agatha Frey, president of the Fiji Media Council, expressed the profound impact Mr. Pratt had on many lives. “We gather not only to say farewell and to mourn, but to celebrate the life of an extraordinary individual, a mentor, a colleague, and a friend,” she remarked. Frey highlighted Pratt’s vast accomplishments, noting that his legacy continues to inspire those who knew him.

During his tenure, Mr. Pratt played a pivotal role in restructuring media governance in Fiji. Following the formation of the news council, he efficiently recruited major media organizations as members. His contributions included writing the constitution and the media code of ethics and practice, working alongside a team from the Council Foundation for the United Kingdom.

The establishment of the Fiji Media Council marked a significant era in the country’s media, which aimed to replace the Fiji Press Council and enhance accountability and standards in journalism. Bob Pratt’s work not only shaped the media landscape but also set a precedent for professional journalistic practices in Fiji.

As friends and family remember his dedication and intellect, there is hope that Mr. Pratt’s spirit and teachings will inspire future generations in the media industry. His commitment to fostering a strong and ethical media environment remains a testament to his character and contributions.

This tribute serves as a reminder of the lasting impact an individual can have on their community, encouraging continued excellence and integrity in the field of journalism.
