Tony Chan, a 24-year-old medical student, attributes much of his success to the unwavering support and encouragement he received from those around him. During the University of Fiji’s graduation ceremony held at the Saweni Campus in Lautoka on Friday, Chan was awarded five prestigious medals, including honors for Outstanding Student in Internal Medicine, Outstanding Student in Paediatrics, and Outstanding Student in Community Health and Family Service. He also received a gold medal award and the Vice-Chancellor Award, making his achievement even more remarkable.
Reflecting on his journey, Chan acknowledged the challenges he faced, particularly being separated from his family during the COVID pandemic. He expressed his gratitude towards his family, classmates, and lecturers, especially Dr. Ifereimi Waqainabete, for their encouragement, which he believes played a crucial role in his accomplishments.
Chan was pleasantly surprised to receive multiple awards and credits his determination, which he feels was recognized by his educators. He pointed out that the foundation of his motivation came from his parents, who have been his guiding mentors.
Looking ahead, he sees the medals and certificates as gateways to limitless opportunities within the medical field.
