Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Strategic Planning, National Development, and Statistics, Professor Biman Prasad, emphasized the importance of reflecting on the teachings of Prophet Muhammad, who promoted peace, inclusivity, tolerance, and ethical behavior. His comments came as he extended wishes to Fiji’s Muslim community celebrating the birthday of the founder of Islam.
Prasad stated that the principles of social, ethical, moral, and religious conduct are fundamental to the nation’s social, economic, and political growth. He recognized the valuable contributions made by various religious groups, particularly the Muslim community, in enhancing education and community life in Fiji.
He highlighted that these values are essential for building lasting peace, harmony, and tolerance, and are critical for promoting inclusivity, equality, dignity, and justice.
Moreover, Prasad recalled a historic moment in 1974 when Hon Siddiq Moidin Koya, then Leader of the National Federation Party, negotiated with Prime Minister Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara to designate Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday and Diwali as public holidays, acknowledging the importance of the Indo-Fijian community.
He concluded by wishing a blessed celebration to the Muslim community in Fiji’s diverse and multi-ethnic society.
