During the recent Fiji Architects Awards held at the Suva Museum, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, highlighted the essential role of architecture in shaping communities and enhancing quality of life. He emphasized that architecture extends beyond the creation of physical spaces; it is fundamentally about designing environments that reflect the aspirations of the people and contribute to the well-being of communities.

Professor Prasad noted that architects play a vital part in the Fiji National Development Plan 2025–2029 and Vision 2050. These initiatives focus on building economic resilience, improving social well-being, and preserving Fiji’s natural environment. He encouraged architects to harness their creativity and innovation to support the successful realization of these plans.

The awards recognized outstanding contributions in various categories. In the residential category, the prestigious award went to Chris Cole Architects for their design of “Vuda House.” Commendations were given to Sharma Designs for “Trilogy Villas” in Denarau.

In the interior awards, Clearview Architects received commendation for the interior of the Great Council of Chiefs in Suva, and Sharma Designs received another commendation for “Trilogy Villas.”

Commercial and refurbishment sectors also saw commendations for projects like Toorak Central by AAPI and Extra Supermarket in Laucala Bay by TropicX. In the commercial industrial category, the award was presented to TropicX for “Extra Supermarket” in Labasa, while Shreedhar Motors received a commendation.

Recognitions in the hotel, community, and education categories included commendations for the School Recovery Program at Nukubolu Primary School and Oneta Resort by Clearview Architects. The award in this category was claimed by Maisuria Designs for the “Namaka Market” in Nadi.

Special merit awards highlighted long-standing contributions, such as the recognition of the Sir Harold Mitchel Residence designed by Murray Cockburn, which has stood for 25 years.

Overall, Chris Cole Architects were celebrated with the main award for their work on “Vuda House.”

This event not only showcased architectural talents in Fiji but also reinforced the important role architecture plays in the country’s development plans and societal enhancement. It offers hope for a future where thoughtful, sustainable design continues to improve the quality of life in communities across Fiji.
