Independent Member of Parliament Shalen Kumar has expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming Girmit Day celebration, recognizing its significance for the Indian diaspora, particularly the descendants of the Girmityas who arrived in Fiji 146 years ago. Kumar emphasized that this event is an opportunity for individuals to share memories, reflect on their heritage, and honor the sacrifices made by their ancestors, highlighting how they forged a life in a new land.

Kumar articulated that Girmit Day represents a time for cultural pride and remembrance, stating, “It’s also a time to see how they paved their way in this foreign land and made Fiji their home.” He noted that despite the challenges faced by their ancestors, the spirit of resilience continues to thrive within the community today.

The 2025 Girmit Day celebration is scheduled to take place from May 9th to 12th in Labasa, following a series of significant cultural events aimed at honoring the history of the Girmityas. Similar articles highlighted the government’s commitment to these celebrations, with a budget of $200,000 allocated for commemorations that focus on recognizing the contributions of Girmitiyas and their descendants, fostering unity among Fiji’s diverse communities.

Past events have included the presentation of certificates and medals to elder descendants, and cultural performances that celebrate this rich history, underscoring the enduring importance of recognizing Fiji’s multi-ethnic heritage.

As communities come together for this year’s Girmit Day, there is hope that it will not only serve as a moment of reflection but also as a way to strengthen cultural connections and promote a harmonious unity among all Fijians, echoing the themes of “Preserving the Past, Envisioning the Future.” The revival of traditions and community bonding during such celebrations contributes positively to the cultural narrative of Fiji, paving the way for a brighter, more inclusive future.
