French nationals in Fiji marked an enriching Francophonie celebration aboard the French Navy ship Vendémiaire last night, an event that underscored the camaraderie between France and Fiji. The gathering was distinguished by the presence of various prominent figures, including members of the diplomatic community, Fiji’s Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs Lenora Qereqeretabua, Minister for Tourism Viliame Gavoka, and officers from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces.

This visit holds special significance as it represents Vendémiaire’s second trip to Fiji since 2022. The celebration coincided with the acknowledgment of the International Organization of La Francophonie on March 20, which champions the French language and encourages collaborative efforts among its 88 member states across political, educational, economic, and cultural sectors.

Captain Gauthier Guilliaumat emphasized the celebration’s role in fortifying bilateral relations between France and Fiji, particularly in enhancing the capabilities of the Fiji Navy. French Ambassador Julie Le Saos remarked on the importance of Francophonie in the Pacific region, noting that the French language is spoken by 321 million people worldwide, making it a vital global language.

As a continuation of this celebration, the Alliance Française de Suva will host various events for Francophonie Month, further enhancing cultural ties and promoting the values shared by the Francophonie community throughout the Pacific.

These events represent a hopeful and positive step towards nurturing cultural identity and collaboration within the Pacific, enabling nations and communities to flourish by embracing their shared heritage and values. Through such initiatives, there is potential for strengthening relationships that transcend borders, fostering a sense of unity and cooperation.
