President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere has praised the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) for reinstating the staff excellence awards to recognize the dedication of their employees in one of Fiji’s most crucial sectors.
The Authority held its awards night on Friday after a four-year break.
Ratu Wiliame expressed his pleasure in being among committed professionals who work tirelessly to ensure effective water management across the nation.
Sharing his experience at the 10th World Water Forum in Bali, Indonesia, the President highlighted the theme “Water for Shared Prosperity.” He recalled reminding global leaders that water is essential for our shared planet, emphasizing its significance as the essence of life and a vital connecting element.
“As a traditional leader, I constantly remind my chiefs and the people of Macuata that we are blessed with nearby water sources. It is our duty to protect these sources to ensure everyone has access to clean and safe water,” he said.
Ratu Wiliame noted the importance of water in sustaining life and called for progress in addressing ongoing challenges to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 6, which is access to clean water and sanitation.
“For Fiji and the Pacific, our relationship with the natural environment is significant but increasingly fragile due to climate change, sea-level rise, and extreme weather events impacting our water and food access,” he added.
He acknowledged the considerable challenges WAF has faced, including climate change impacts and the need for infrastructure upgrades. However, he commended the team’s commitment to delivering essential water and wastewater services nationwide.
The President praised the executive board, management, and staff for aligning with national and international development strategies, especially the Water Sector Strategy 2050, which focuses on transforming service delivery and upgrading infrastructure over the next three years.
“Our sustainable development relies heavily on water access and livelihoods, making responsible management crucial for our future, especially amid worsening climate change,” he noted.
He emphasized the integral role of water management in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including those related to health, education, gender, and poverty alleviation by 2030.
“This award system boosts employee morale, promotes innovation, and fosters organizational engagement, resulting in productive workplaces,” added Ratu Wiliame.
“Let us all commit to ensuring reliable access to clean water, effective wastewater management, and sustainable practices for future generations,” he urged.
“On behalf of the people of Fiji, I thank you for your perseverance, adherence to safety protocols, and commitment to providing quality water and wastewater services to 154,000 customers in urban and suburban areas, and progressing service in rural areas,” he said.
He also paid tribute to the contributions of WAF staff who have passed away, honoring their efforts toward the organization’s goals and national commitments.
