Civil Service Day has highlighted the profound commitment of civil service workers like Nanise Ratumaiyale, who has devoted over three decades to serving some of the most remote communities in Fiji. Currently a welfare officer with the Ministry of Women, Children, and Social Protection, Ratumaiyale began her journey with the Ministry of Labour in 1993. Her career has taken her to various locations, including the interiors of Namosi and Serua, all while she raised six children.

Reflecting on her experience, Ratumaiyale described her path as both challenging and rewarding, noting the significant changes that have occurred within the civil service since her entry. “In past years, we walked miles as welfare officers. Resources were scarce, but we found joy in our work as it felt like a calling, especially in areas with limited access to technology,” she shared. Furthermore, she contrasted her initial experiences with today’s streamlined systems that distribute responsibilities across different ministries, a shift from the former Public Service Commission model.

While Ratumaiyale appreciated the recent three percent salary increase for civil servants, she emphasized that more should be done to acknowledge the hard work and long hours many public servants endure. “It’s crucial that we recognize these efforts and ensure a better balance between their mental and physical well-being,” she asserted.

Ratumaiyale expressed hope that Civil Service Day will continue to grow, advocating for recognition of those who serve diligently behind the scenes, holding the nation together through their unwavering dedication.

This sentiment is echoed by President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, who has previously called for greater acknowledgment of civil servants, particularly those in remote areas, for their critical contributions during times of crisis. Such recognition and the ongoing discussions about improving the conditions and support for public servants illustrate a hopeful and progressive outlook for the civil service in Fiji, anchoring the community’s trust in its public institutions.
