Celebrating Chinese Heritage: Fiji Commemorates National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival

Two significant events in Chinese culture were celebrated in Suva over the weekend, led by Fiji’s President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, alongside China’s Ambassador to Fiji Zhou Jian, Fiji government ministers, leaders of the Chinese community, and their families and friends.

The Fiji Chinese Association organized the festivities, which featured a variety of cultural dances and a feast to commemorate China’s National Day and the Mid-Autumn Festival.

“The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon festival, carries profound cultural importance for the Chinese community both locally and internationally,” President Ratu Wiliame stated during his address.

Ambassador Zhou emphasized the significance of the 15th day of the 8th lunar month, highlighting it as a time for family reunions and celebrations, noting, “On this day, the moon is at its brightest and fullest. Families come together to enjoy moon cakes.”

Jenny Seeto, President of the Chinese Association of Fiji, spoke about the significance of China’s National Day, which marks the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China on October 1. “It has become common for our community in Fiji to celebrate the founding of the People’s Republic of China together with the Mid-Autumn Festival, due to their close dates,” she remarked.

She expressed pride in the enduring relationship between Fiji and China, referencing the recent successful 10-day visit of Fiji’s Prime Minister to China.

“Celebrating National Day is an opportunity to reflect on China’s remarkable journey from its modest beginnings to its current status as a global powerhouse, showcasing the vision, determination, and resilience of Chinese leaders who laid the groundwork for the nation’s advancement,” Ms. Seeto added.

She also shared her personal observations of China’s transformation over the past 40 years, noting the significant development in cities and rural areas, including changes in her parents’ village.

Both Ratu Wiliame and Ms. Seeto recognized and appreciated the contributions that the Chinese community has made to Fiji’s nation-building efforts and the strong bilateral ties between Fiji and China.
