The Chinese community in Fiji, along with local dignitaries and officials, gathered at the Vineyard Palace in Suva on Sunday to celebrate two significant events: the 75th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China and the Mid-Autumn Festival. This celebration highlighted the growing relationship between China and Fiji, emphasizing the contributions of the Chinese community to Fijian society. China’s Ambassador to Fiji, Zhou Jian, spoke at the event, outlining the collaboration between the Chinese government and Fiji, and acknowledging the significant impact of Fijians of Chinese descent on the local economy. “The relationship between China and Fiji has flourished since the establishment of diplomatic ties 49 years ago,” Mr. Zhou noted. He added that recent agreements following Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s visit to China aimed to enhance cooperation and mutual benefits.

Mr. Zhou emphasized China’s ongoing commitment to its Pacific allies, including Fiji, showcasing substantial investments and development aid that have supported Fiji’s economy through various infrastructure projects and emergency assistance during natural disasters. The celebration of the Mid-Autumn Festival, a key cultural event in China symbolizing family reunion and prosperity, underscored the connection between Chinese culture and Fijian society. The festivities were attended by notable figures including Fiji’s President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, who acknowledged the valuable contributions made by the Chinese community in Fiji.

The ambassador highlighted how the Chinese community has played a crucial role in fostering strong ties between the two nations since Chinese immigrants first arrived in Fiji in 1855. Their contributions to agriculture and trade have greatly influenced Fiji’s economic landscape, with their presence now extending into various sectors such as education and local businesses. The community has also shown support during crises, affirming their commitment to the welfare of the entire Fijian society.

Additionally, Mr. Zhou reflected on the 75th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China, stating that it marks a period of transformation and progress under the leadership of the Communist Party of China. He pointed out notable advancements in poverty alleviation, infrastructure, and environmental conservation. Through initiatives like the Belt and Road Initiative, China aims to enhance global cooperation and mutual benefits. The thriving relationship with China presents Fiji with further development opportunities, and as both nations prepare to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their diplomatic ties next year, they are poised to reinforce their cooperation and shared prosperity. The upcoming year will also mark the 170th anniversary of the Chinese community in Fiji, providing a platform to honor their historical contributions and the friendship between the two nations.
