British American Tobacco Fiji held its annual Star Farmer Awards on March 21 at its Leaf Division facility in Votualevu, Nadi, coinciding with the company’s 70th anniversary. This year’s event celebrated the invaluable contributions of 88 farmers to the tobacco supply chain, recognizing their dedication to excellence in leaf cultivation.
General Manager Sam Dormor addressed attendees, commending farmers for their outstanding production and performance achievements. This marks the fourth year of the Star Farmer Awards, which rewards those who stand out in the company’s Growing Excellence program. The 88 recipients were honored across three categories: gold, silver, and bronze.
The celebration underscores the significance of agriculture within Fiji’s economy, particularly in the tobacco sector. Recent reports have highlighted an impressive 14 percent increase in crop yields over the past year, showcasing the resilience of farmers despite challenging weather conditions. The determination and spirit of these farmers, often referred to as “warriors,” play a vital role in ensuring local food security and maintaining the robustness of the tobacco supply chain.
Beyond recognizing individual accomplishments, the awards embody BAT Fiji’s commitment to empowering farmers and strengthening agricultural productivity. This initiative not only fosters hope for the agricultural sector but also aims to bolster the broader community and economic framework in Fiji.
Looking forward, BAT Fiji is adapting to modern challenges by incorporating sustainable practices. Their recent partnership with Vision Energy Solutions to launch a $1.2 million solar project is a testament to their commitment to innovation that supports both agriculture and environmental sustainability. This progressive approach sets a promising precedent for future advancements in Fiji’s agricultural landscape.
