Shane Smith, the chief executive of Westpac Fiji, recently commemorated an impressive 40 years of service at the nation’s oldest bank. Having made history as the first local chief executive in over 120 years, Smith began his career at Westpac as an 18-year-old at the Suva branch. Throughout his tenure, he has been dedicated to enhancing the bank’s relationship with its customers.
Reflecting on his journey, Smith expressed satisfaction with the transformational changes that Westpac has brought about not only for its customers but also for the wider Fijian community and economy. He highlighted the bank’s commitment to community service through initiatives such as a staff volunteer program, free financial literacy offerings, and the Westpac Women and Girls Education Grant, which has been active for over 13 years.
In a positive sign for Westpac’s future, last year the Westpac Group reaffirmed its commitment to the Pacific region, including Fiji and Papua New Guinea. Smith noted that the group’s confidence in the Fijian economy and its solid financial markets lays the groundwork for further investments anticipated in 2025.
As he celebrated this significant milestone, Shane Smith took the opportunity to express his gratitude to his colleagues and staff, acknowledging their support over the years.
The story of Shane Smith’s career and Westpac’s commitment to community development serves as an inspiring example of leadership and dedication to economic progress in Fiji. It illustrates how long-term service in an organization can lead to significant positive contributions to both the business and its surrounding community, highlighting a hopeful outlook for continued growth and development.
