Marist Brother Fergus Garrett is set to celebrate his 90th birthday on Sunday, August 11, 2024, and remains active in educating students at Corpus Christi College in Suva, making him potentially the oldest teacher in Fiji. Originally from New Zealand, Garrett became a Fijian citizen after arriving in the country in 1970 as a Marist Brother. Throughout his time in Fiji, he has taught at various schools across the nation.
A gathering to honor his significant milestone was held at the Marist Brothers’ residence in St Marcellin Primary School over the weekend. Reflecting on his journey, Brother Fergus shared, “I came to Fiji in 1970 and was at Albert Park to celebrate the independence of Fiji.” He reminisced about his early years, stating, “The late Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara was chief minister, and I was sent to Fiji to teach at Marist Brothers High School, where I spent several years.”
Brother Fergus has educated numerous students who have gone on to become prominent leaders, including former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama, among many others.
An interview with Brother Fergus and highlights from the birthday celebration will be available on the Fiji Times Facebook Page this Thursday.
