Shane Smith, the chief executive of Westpac Fiji, recently marked a remarkable 40 years of service with the nation’s oldest banking institution. As the first local CEO in over 120 years, Smith began his journey with Westpac at just 18 years old, starting at the Suva branch. His dedication throughout the decades has been focused on serving Westpac’s customers and fostering positive change within the community.
Reflecting on his career, Smith expressed pride in the transformational changes Westpac has implemented, benefiting not only customers but also contributing to the Fijian economy. He highlighted the bank’s commitment to community service through initiatives like the staff Volunteer program, free Financial Literacy courses, and the Westpac Women and Girls Education Grant, which has been providing support for over 13 years.
Additionally, Smith mentioned that Westpac Group has reaffirmed its commitment to remain in the Pacific, particularly in Fiji and Papua New Guinea. This decision underscores Westpac’s confidence in the Fijian economy and its potential for growth, with plans for further investments set for 2025.
In a celebration with colleagues and staff, Smith took a moment to express gratitude for their ongoing support throughout his career, marking this milestone with the people who have been part of his journey.
This celebration not only honors Smith’s long tenure but also reflects Westpac Fiji’s commitment to community and economic development. It offers hope for continued progress and stability in the banking sector within Fiji, paving the way for future generations to benefit from sustained investment and support.
