The Fiji Police Force celebrated its 150th anniversary on Friday, marking a significant milestone in its history. Minister for Home Affairs Pio Tikoduadua officiated the sesquicentennial event at the Nasova Police ground in Suva, honoring those who have contributed to the force over the years.
The celebration featured a parade involving members of the Fiji Police Force alongside officers from the Fiji Corrections Service, starting from the Totogo Police Station and moving to the academy. Minister Tikoduadua highlighted the extensive community service provided by the Fiji Police Force over the past century and a half.
He acknowledged the dedication of the officers, stating, “The men and women of the Fiji Police Force have carried out their duties under challenging conditions with little recognition yet displayed unwavering commitment to keeping our communities safe.” He also noted the participation from the Fiji Corrections Service as a testament to their collaborative efforts in serving the nation.
The origin of the Fiji Police Force dates back to October 10, 1874, when the first officers were appointed through a notice in the Royal Gazette, laying the groundwork for the organization as it is known today. The event served to remember and honor the legacy of those who have served within the police and corrections sectors throughout Fiji’s history.
