Caines Jannif, a distinguished company rooted in vision, perseverance, and the art of photography, recently celebrated a remarkable milestone: its 120th anniversary. The celebration took place on February 26 at the Chili House on Brown Street in Suva, attracting employees, their families, and individuals who have fostered deep connections with the company over the decades.
The event was filled with a vibrant atmosphere that reflected the camaraderie present since Caines Jannif’s establishment. The company’s journey began in 1904 when Frederick Caines opened his photographic studio after acquiring the Le Faivre Photographic Studio. He revitalized the establishment as Caine’s Studios, and it thrived under his guidance.
In 1912, he hired N.A. Khan as the manager, which paved the way for further growth. By 1924, Mr. Khan’s nephews, Hannif Akbar and later Ben Jannif in 1926, joined, bringing new energy to the venture. The studio continued to thrive despite the challenges of an evolving industry, thanks to the resilience and innovation of its team.
In 1935, due to health issues, Mr. Caines stepped back, passing the company’s leadership to a partnership with Mrs. Caines, Hannif Akbar, and Ben Jannif. However, in 1953, they faced setbacks, and with Amina Jannif joining the business, the studio transitioned into a new era characterized by expansion and modernization. Eventually, Ben Jannif handed the reins to his son, Ikbal Jannif, ensuring the family legacy continued to flourish.
During the anniversary dinner, director Sofia Jannif expressed her joy at reuniting with long-serving staff, recalling a challenging moment from six years prior when their factory was devastated by fire. Kelsey Jannif, the longest-serving employee, reflected on the transformative journey of photography from manual processes to digital. She emphasized the intimate connection that employees have developed with the company over the years.
Employees have shown unwavering loyalty; many regard Caines Jannif as their second home, indicative of the strong familial bonds cultivated within the workplace. The company’s commitment to capturing Fiji’s historical moments has made it a custodian of the nation’s memory, including landmark events like the country’s independence ceremony in 1970.
As Caines Jannif celebrates its legacy, it continues to reshape the photographic landscape and inspire future generations to uphold its esteemed tradition of excellence. This journey from humble beginnings to a revered name in photography not only highlights the company’s dedication to its craft but also its integral role in preserving the beauty and essence of Fiji for posterity.
This 120-year journey is not just a celebration of the past but a hopeful reminder of the possibilities and memories yet to be captured. Caines Jannif stands as a testament to the artistry of photography and its ability to reflect the stories of a nation.
