Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew has emphasized the importance of responsible liquor consumption in light of a recent altercation outside a popular nightclub in Suva. Addressing the incident, which is currently under investigation, Mr. Fong Chew stated that the police are keenly aware of the challenges posed by excessive intoxication and will be adjusting their security measures to ensure a safe and enjoyable New Year’s celebration for all.

According to Mr. Fong Chew, incidents like the aforementioned brawl often stem from individuals losing awareness of their surroundings due to overconsumption of alcohol. He highlighted the difficulties involved in managing an intoxicated person, noting that intoxicated individuals often believe their perceptions and behaviors are justified.

He maintained that nightclub owners have the right to refuse service to already intoxicated patrons, yet these situations can escalate, resulting in security being called to intervene. This can lead to escalating tensions, particularly when the intoxicated person’s friends become involved.

As New Year’s festivities approach, Mr. Fong Chew encourages everyone to enjoy responsibly. He urges the public to recognize their limits and to be mindful of their behavior in social settings. Intoxicated individuals may struggle to control their actions, whether verbal or physical, which can lead to unfortunate encounters.

Mr. Fong Chew reminds the community of the importance of personal responsibility, urging everyone to use their judgment and senses wisely. He emphasizes that even in festive environments, individuals maintain the ability to make choices that avoid confrontations and ensure a safe celebration.

As the New Year approaches, the message of moderation and responsibility serves as a reminder for all to make the celebratory season enjoyable for everyone involved. Embracing this advice can lead to a safer and more positive start to the new year.
