As Mother’s Day approaches, the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has issued a stern reminder to traders about the importance of ethical practices. Chief Executive Senikavika L. Jiuta highlighted that the celebration should focus on appreciation rather than exploitation, urging consumers to enjoy the day without falling victim to dishonest pricing or deceptive advertising.
The FCCC has ramped up its monitoring efforts, especially targeting retail and hospitality outlets where flowers, perfumes, jewelry, clothing, and gifts are sold. Jiuta emphasized that promotional pricing must be clear and consistent, ensuring that all goods and services are of acceptable quality. In the lead-up to those festive occasions, past inspections revealed more than 55 violations during the Easter season, emphasizing the necessity for strict compliance in the busy shopping days.
Additionally, as part of consumer protection initiatives, ANZ Fiji has advised customers to be vigilant against scams, particularly warning families to be aware of suspicious messages or calls that could lead to fraud. Country head Rabih Yazbek stressed the importance of recognizing these warning signs and encouraged open discussions among families to stay informed about the tactics that scammers employ today.
This proactive stance by both the FCCC and ANZ Fiji aims to cultivate a safe and fair shopping environment, fostering a sense of community support and ethical commerce. Amid these challenges, there remains hope that through increased awareness and collaboration, consumers can confidently celebrate Mother’s Day, ensuring both joy and fairness during this meaningful occasion.
