The Chinese Cultural Centre (CCC), in collaboration with the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs, is set to host the “2025 Happy Chinese New Year Folklife Festival” at Nausori Plaza tomorrow. This vibrant event promises to celebrate both Chinese cultural traditions and their similarities to iTaukei culture, emphasizing the significance of Chinese New Year for people around the world.
The festival will launch at 10 AM and will feature a wide array of activities, including the unveiling of a Year of the Snake Stamp for 2025. Attendees can expect captivating showcases such as the China and Fiji Intangible Cultural Heritage Fan Art Show, featuring both traditional and contemporary fan artistry from both cultures; a China Zodiac 34 Exhibition, which will include zodiac-themed snack designs from 34 designers; and a Ceramic Art Show displaying the intricate artistry of both nations.
In addition, there will be exhibitions focusing on the intangible cultural heritage connected to the Chinese New Year from Shaanxi Province, as well as creative products that merge everyday items with traditional heritage. Attendees can also enjoy presentations of Chaozhou Cuisine and a Chinese New Year concert, complemented by food stalls offering culinary delights from both China and Fiji.
Chinese New Year’s Eve will coincide with celebrations on January 28, marking the transition from the Year of the Dragon (2024) to the Year of the Snake (2025) according to the Chinese calendar.
This festival not only highlights the rich tapestry of cultural heritage but also serves as a reflection of the broader multicultural landscape of Fiji. As noted in previous celebrations such as the recent Mid-Autumn Festival, the Chinese community plays a vital role in enriching both the nation’s cultural identity and community spirit. Events like these foster unity, appreciation, and cultural exchange among diverse groups, showing the strength derived from Fiji’s multicultural society.
In a world that thrives on cultural diversity, the upcoming Chinese New Year Folklife Festival offers an optimistic reminder of the power of shared traditions and communal celebration. It is an opportunity for all communities to come together in joy, reflecting Fiji’s commitment to maintaining its rich, multicultural identity.
