The Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Kemueli Baledrokadroka, highlighted the impact of technical failures in closed circuit television (CCTV) systems on police investigations. He indicated that the Northern Command Centre relies on CCTVs at various locations in Labasa Town to monitor potential criminal activities.
SSP Baledrokadroka reiterated that while the police strive to gather evidence, technical issues can sometimes delay investigations. This was evident in a recent taxi driver assault case that occurred in Labasa Town on September 3, where the CCTV footage played a crucial role in apprehending the suspect the following Wednesday. The victim, Aiyaz Din Mohammed, 31, sustained facial injuries from the alleged attack.
The SSP urged local businesses to install CCTV cameras to bolster security and aid police in gathering information. He emphasized the importance of active collaboration between the public and police for sharing information about crime suspects.
In response, Mahen Prasad, chairman of the Labasa Taxi Association, stressed the need for police vigilance, particularly among traffic officers, to prevent future assaults. He noted that while police maintain their watch, taxi drivers from the association will contribute to information sharing regarding illegal taxi operators, who operate without requisite permits.
Prasad pointed out that several individuals in Labasa use private vehicles as unlicensed taxis. He asserted the necessity to put an end to these illegal operations.
