CCTV Woes: How Technical Failures Are Impacting Police Investigations

Malfunctions in closed circuit television (CCTV) systems can hinder police investigations and evidence collection, according to Divisional Police Commander Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kemueli Baledrokadroka.

SSP Baledrokadroka noted that the Northern Command Centre is connected to various CCTVs in Labasa Town to help monitor potential criminal activities. He emphasized that while police strive to gather necessary information, technical issues can sometimes delay investigations.

Regarding the recent assault case involving a taxi driver in Labasa Town on September 3, SSP Baledrokadroka confirmed that CCTV footage played a crucial role in the arrest of the suspect last Wednesday. The victim, 31-year-old taxi driver Aiyaz Din Mohammed, sustained facial injuries during the alleged attack.

SSP Baledrokadroka encouraged local businesses to install CCTV cameras to enhance security and support the police’s efforts in gathering information. “I urge for more active public-police partnership in information sharing regarding crime suspects,” he stated.

Mahen Prasad, chairman of the Labasa Taxi Association, echoed the need for police vigilance, particularly among traffic officers, to prevent similar assaults in the future. He highlighted that while the police maintain surveillance, taxi drivers from the association will contribute by reporting illegal taxi operators.

Prasad pointed out that numerous individuals in Labasa are operating private vehicles as illegal taxis without permits. “If it is illegal to operate, it must stop,” he asserted.
