Technical issues with closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras can hinder police investigations by complicating evidence collection, according to Senior Superintendent of Police, Kemueli Baledrokadroka. He noted that the Northern Command Centre is connected to CCTV cameras in various locations around Labasa Town to monitor potential criminal activity.
SSP Baledrokadroka emphasized that while the police strive to gather essential information, technical malfunctions can sometimes delay investigations. Regarding a recent assault case involving a taxi driver in Labasa Town on September 3, he mentioned that CCTV footage was instrumental in identifying and apprehending the suspect last Wednesday.
The victim, 31-year-old taxi driver Aiyaz Din Mohammed, sustained facial injuries during the alleged attack. SSP Baledrokadroka urged local businesses to install CCTV systems to bolster security and aid police in their efforts to collect information.
He called for enhanced collaboration between the community and law enforcement in reporting crime suspects. Labasa Taxi Association chairman Mahen Prasad echoed the need for police vigilance, particularly from traffic officers, to prevent similar incidents from happening again.
Prasad highlighted that while police maintain surveillance, taxi drivers from the association would provide information about illegal taxi operators, who drive private vehicles without the necessary permits. He pointed out the prevalence of individuals in Labasa using personal cars as unlicensed taxis, emphasizing that such illegal operations should cease.
