A police officer from Vunika, Labasa is under investigation following an alleged incident caught on closed-circuit television (CCTV) that shows him purchasing drugs at the Labasa Market. This event is said to have occurred last Thursday.
An ex-police officer witnessed the individual in uniform as he purportedly left the market with illegal substances. In response to the complaint, Labasa Town Council’s special administrator, Paul Jaduram, confirmed that the market master reviewed the CCTV footage and promptly reported the issue to the Labasa Police Station since the officer was in uniform.
Jaduram noted that members of the community are aware of police officers involved in drug activities and feel comfortable sharing this information with trusted individuals. He emphasized the importance of vigilance among parents, as there is concern about some children becoming involved in drug sales.
“The municipal market is a bustling area with continuous movement, being near the bus and taxi stands, along with various shops,” he said. “We all need to collaborate to combat this drug issue effectively.”
Divisional Police Commander (DPC) North, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kemueli Baledrokadroka, confirmed that the investigation is currently active.
This incident highlights a serious issue within the community that necessitates collective action and vigilance. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of transparency and accountability within law enforcement agencies to maintain public trust. The community’s proactive stance against drug-related activities is commendable, signaling a collective desire to foster a safer environment for all residents.
In combating drug issues, communities can take comfort in knowing that they can work together to address these challenges, ensuring that everyone, including the youth, remains safe and well-informed.
