A police officer stationed in Vunika, Labasa, is currently under investigation after being captured on closed-circuit television (CCTV) allegedly purchasing drugs at the Labasa Market. This incident reportedly occurred last Thursday.
An ex-police officer observed the uniformed officer leaving the market with what appeared to be illicit drugs. Following the complaint, Paul Jaduram, the special administrator chair of the Labasa Town Council, stated that the market master reviewed the CCTV footage and promptly reported the incident to the Labasa Police Station, given that the officer was in uniform.
Jaduram noted that there is public awareness regarding certain police officers potentially involved in drug activities. He encouraged community members to share information they trust to initiate appropriate actions. “People come to us with information about drug peddlers, and we communicate this to the police to ensure they can take action,” he said.
Additionally, Jaduram urged parents to be vigilant, as they might be aware of some children participating in drug transactions. He emphasized the importance of community collaboration to tackle the ongoing drug problem in the area, especially since the municipal market is a central hub with significant foot traffic due to its proximity to transportation services and shops.
Divisional Police Commander (DPC) North, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kemueli Baledrokadroka, confirmed that an investigation is currently underway.
This incident highlights the importance of accountability and vigilance within both law enforcement and the community. It is a reminder of the challenges faced in the fight against drug abuse and trafficking, but also an opportunity for collective action. With the community’s support and cooperation with the police, there is potential to make meaningful progress in addressing drug-related issues in Labasa.
