Technical issues with closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras can impede police investigations by complicating evidence collection, according to Divisional Police Commander, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kemueli Baledrokadroka. He noted that the Northern Command Centre is connected to various CCTVs in Labasa Town to help monitor potential criminal activities.
SSP Baledrokadroka emphasized that the public should recognize the efforts made by police to gather information, although technical malfunctions can sometimes delay investigations. He cited the recent assault case involving taxi driver Aiyaz Din Mohammed, who sustained facial injuries during an incident on September 3. The SSP stated that CCTV footage played a crucial role in the apprehension of the suspect the following Wednesday.
He urged local businesses to install CCTV cameras to improve surveillance for their security and assist police in gathering information. “I encourage a more active partnership between the public and police in sharing information about crime suspects,” he added.
Mahen Prasad, chairman of the Labasa Taxi Association, echoed the importance of police vigilance, particularly among traffic officers, to prevent such assaults in the future. He noted that while police are increasing their surveillance efforts, taxi drivers are also contributing by reporting illegal taxi operators, who are using private vehicles for taxi services without the required permits. Mr. Prasad stated, “If it is illegal to operate, it must stop.”
