A police officer from Vunika, Labasa, is currently facing an investigation after being captured on CCTV allegedly purchasing drugs at Labasa Market last Thursday. The incident came to light when a former police officer witnessed the officer in uniform leaving the market with suspected drugs.
Following the complaint, Labasa Town Council’s special administrator, Paul Jaduram, stated that the market master promptly reviewed the CCTV footage and subsequently reported the incident to Labasa Police, given that the individual involved was an officer of the law.
Mr. Jaduram expressed that community members are aware of certain police officers possibly engaging in drug-related activities and encouraged the public to share their concerns with trusted individuals. He highlighted that residents often inform authorities about drug peddlers in the market, emphasizing the importance of collaboration with the police to combat drug issues.
He also urged parents to remain vigilant, noting a rise in youth involvement in drug transactions. With the municipal market being a hub of activity, situated near transportation facilities and other shops, he stressed the community’s collective responsibility in addressing the drug crisis.
Divisional Police Commander (DPC) North Senior Superintendent of Police Kemueli Baledrokadroka confirmed that investigations are ongoing.
This incident underscores the ongoing challenges related to drug issues within the community, but it also illuminates the importance of vigilance and reporting suspicious activities. With collaboration between the community and law enforcement, there is hope for progress in tackling drug-related problems in Labasa. Together, proactive measures can be taken to foster a safer environment for all residents.
