A police officer from Vunika in Labasa is currently under investigation after being captured on Closed-circuit television (CCTV) allegedly purchasing drugs at the Labasa Market. This incident reportedly occurred last Thursday and was brought to light by an ex-police officer who witnessed the officer in uniform leaving the market with the illicit substances.
Following the public complaint, Paul Jaduram, the special administrator for the Labasa Town Council, confirmed that the market master promptly reviewed the CCTV footage and subsequently reported the matter to the Labasa Police Station, given that the suspect was in uniform.
Jaduram noted a growing concern among the community regarding the involvement of some police officers in drug-related activities. He encouraged the public to share information with trusted individuals to help combat this issue. “People do come and tell us when they see drug peddlers in the market, and we try to relay the information to the police for action,” he stated.
Highlighting the heavy foot traffic at the municipal market, which is situated near transport hubs and shops, Jaduram urged parents to be vigilant as some children have been identified as buyers and sellers of drugs in the area. He emphasized the need for community collaboration to effectively combat the ongoing drug problem.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kemueli Baledrokadroka, the Divisional Police Commander (North), confirmed that investigations are still in progress.
This situation underscores the importance of community awareness and cooperation with law enforcement in addressing drug-related issues. It serves as a reminder that the fight against drugs requires a collective effort from both officials and residents, fostering a safer environment for everyone, especially the youth.
Overall, while this incident raises concerns, it also opens a dialogue about community vigilance and the collaborative efforts needed to counteract drug-related problems.
