A police officer from Vunika, Labasa is under investigation after being caught on CCTV allegedly purchasing drugs at the Labasa Market. The incident reportedly took place last Thursday, witnessed by a former police officer who observed the officer in uniform leaving the area with the suspicious substances.

Paul Jaduram, the special administrator of the Labasa Town Council, confirmed that upon receiving a complaint, the market master reviewed the CCTV footage and promptly reported the officer’s actions to the Labasa Police Station, given that he was in uniform at the time. Jaduram noted the community’s awareness of drug-related activities involving some police officers, encouraging citizens to share concerns with trustworthy individuals.

He highlighted the necessity for vigilance, particularly among parents, as some children are suspected to be engaging in drug transactions. Jaduram emphasized the busy nature of the municipal market due to its proximity to transportation hubs, urging a collaborative effort to combat the drug issue in the community.

Senior Superintendent of Police Kemueli Baledrokadroka, the Divisional Police Commander for the North, confirmed that the investigation is ongoing.

This incident serves as a reminder of the critical need for community involvement in combating drug-related crimes. By fostering a culture of open communication and cooperation between the citizens and law enforcement, there is hope for a safer environment for everyone. Together, through awareness and action, communities can take significant strides toward addressing the challenges posed by drug activity.
