Motorists are being urged to exercise caution while driving on Queens Road in Namaka, Nadi, as West Police Commander Senior Superintendent of Police Iakobo Vaisewa highlights the presence of street dwellers begging in busy areas. This situation raises concerns about potential road accidents, prompting SSP Vaisewa to call for assistance from relevant agencies to help address the issue.
He noted that previous efforts to assist street dwellers by returning them to their families have not resulted in lasting change, as many return to the streets within days. He further emphasized the importance of public awareness, particularly regarding the fact that some individuals begging may have mental health challenges.
SSP Vaisewa advised drivers to slow down and remain vigilant when encountering these individuals, especially in high-traffic situations. He stated that if any street dwellers obstruct traffic or engage in illegal activities, the police will take necessary actions against them.
This situation serves as a reminder of the broader societal issues related to homelessness and mental health, emphasizing the need for community support and intervention. By increasing awareness and encouraging responsible behavior among drivers, there is hope that the situation can improve for both street dwellers and motorists alike.
By addressing these challenges collectively, the community can foster a safer environment for all individuals on the roads.
