Caution: Driver Alert Groups Endanger Road Safety

Motorists are being warned against the creation of Viber groups that share information about police traffic checkpoints and speed radar locations, a move intended to avoid law enforcement efforts aimed at ensuring road safety. Superintendent of Police Eroni Soqosoqo, the Acting Divisional Police Commander of the Northern Division, stated that these groups to inform drivers undermined police work and could lead to dangerous situations on the roads.

According to SP Soqosoqo, drivers who receive such alerts tend to slow down when approaching checkpoints but resume speeding afterward, which can result in accidents. He emphasized that individuals participating in such activities would be held accountable for their actions. The police are working closely with the Land Transport Authority (LTA) to promote road safety and remove reckless drivers.

As the New Year approaches, law enforcement in the Northern Division is on high alert, increasing foot patrols and road operations to ensure public safety during this festive period.

Additionally, the LTA has pointed out that driver fatigue is a significant factor contributing to road accidents in Fiji. They stress the importance of taking breaks during long drives to combat fatigue and encourage passengers to speak up if they observe signs of a driver’s tiredness or erratic behavior. The LTA has launched a “Stop, Revive, and Survive” campaign to enhance road safety and reduce the number of accidents.

It is crucial that actions such as alerting drivers about checkpoints be curtailed, as they threaten the ongoing efforts to create safer roads for all. Increasing public awareness and fostering a sense of responsibility among both drivers and passengers can contribute significantly to improving road safety.

In a response to these warnings, it is hopeful that by adhering to road safety guidelines and working together as a community, both law enforcement and the public can help reduce accidents and ensure a safer travel experience, especially during busy holiday seasons.
